CHITTENANGO LIONS CONTINUE WORK ON CHILDREN'S CAMP

Over 30 years ago the Chittenango Lions Club decided on a long term commitment that involved helping maintain the Madison County Children's Camp in the Eaton area south of Morrisville. The camp provides summer activities for many of the county's disadvantaged children. Though the cost to the local club is not significant, the commitment is primarily labor-intensive that involves repairs and general maintenance of the buildings located at the site.

However, some years ago, the Chittenango Lions designated and built a 30 foot footbridge spanning a creek and swampy area on one of the camp's main trails. Lion Dick Montross, designed the structure and has consistently served as foreman of the Lions' annual work crews. He is also a past member of the camp's board of directors, a position now held by Jerry Vaikness who is also a Chittenango Lion.

The club's goal this summer was to paint the bridge, the first time it required such work since it was originally built. The club had hoped to accomplish this in late Spring. But due to bad weather and other conflicts, the Lions could not get to the project until mid-June when a group spent a morning scraping the structure. Then a few days later they spent a full day putting a coat of brown on the bridge. Altogether the Chittenango Lions Club spent some 45 labor hours this summer making sure the bridge would be ready when camp opened July 1st.

Getting Ready:  On June 20 five Chittenango Lions spent the full morning scraping the bridge at the Madison County Children's Camp in West Eaton preparing it for painting. Lunch Break on Paint Day:--Then on June 27th a work crew of Lions spent the better part of a day again at the Madison County Children's Camp in West Eaton applying a coat of paint to the complete bridge. Pictured above (L-R) are: Lions Paul Haynes, Don Clark, Mike Lynch, Dick Steinbach and Marty Iritz. (Not in picture is Lion Dick Montross who took the photo).

Project Complete for 2007:--Pictured above is the recently painted bridge, a project of the Chittenango Lions Club, at the Madison County Children's Camp in West Eaton. Several years ago the Club built the 30 foot footbridge across a creek and swampland necessary to complete the main trail used safely by the children who attend the camp each summer. Lion Dick Montross, then a member of the camp's board of directors designed and supervised the project for the Lions Club.
